Visiting Kyrgyzstan? Here are nine beautiful places to add to your itinerary.

Last year, we spent two and a half weeks exploring the incredible country of Kyrgyzstan, a place truly unlike anywhere else. The landscapes are incredibly diverse, the food is fresh and delicious, and the people are unbelievably kind and welcoming, despite the language barrier.

This guide outlines the top places to visit across the country, moving from west to east.

Song Kul Lake
Song Kul Lake is one of the most popular destinations in Kyrgyzstan. It is a stunning high-alpine lake surrounded by family-run yurt camps, located in the northern Naryn region. It is the second-largest lake in the country and a must-visit destination despite its remote location.
The lake sits at around 10,000 feet above sea level and is typically accessible only between June and September. During winter, mountain passes from Naryn and Kochkor are often closed due to snow and harsh weather. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended if you plan to drive yourself.

Kel Suu Lake
Kel Suu is one of the most beautiful high-alpine lakes in Kyrgyzstan. The country is home to more than 2,000 alpine lakes, and Kel Suu is among the most impressive.
The lake is accessible only by foot or horse. Travelers must park near village yurts and continue on foot or hire a local horse. Border permits and a 4×4 vehicle are required to reach the area, and permits should be arranged in advance.
From the settlement, the hike to the lake is approximately seven miles with moderate elevation gain. Kel Suu sits at 11,529 feet above sea level, so proper acclimatization and hydration are important.

Naryn
Naryn is a small city in southeastern Kyrgyzstan that serves as an excellent base for exploring destinations such as Tash Rabat, Kel Suu Lake, and Song Kul Lake.
Although it does not require much time, Naryn is ideal for stocking up on supplies, accessing reliable WiFi, and enjoying a hot shower. The city offers comfortable guesthouses and cafés, making it a convenient stop during longer journeys.

Tash Rabat
Tash Rabat is a remote mountain valley home to nomadic yurt camps and breathtaking scenery. It represents the traditional image many travelers associate with Kyrgyzstan.
There is no mobile service in the area, so it is important to download offline maps and essential apps in advance. The valley also serves as the starting point for hikes toward Chatyr Kol Lake, although border permits are required for these routes.

Issyk Kul Lake
Issyk Kul is a vast lake in eastern Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by numerous towns and villages. It is the second-largest alpine lake in the world, measuring 182 kilometers in length and 60 kilometers in width.
The lake is most popular during summer, when visitors come to swim and relax along its shores. The northern shore is more developed, while the southern side offers a more natural experience with canyons and mountain landscapes.
Issyk Kul is easily accessible by public transport from Bishkek or Karakol.

Mars Canyon
Mars Canyon is a quieter and less-visited alternative to the well-known Fairytale Canyon. Though smaller, it feels raw and untouched, making it ideal for camping and photography.
The canyon can be reached by navigating to “Kan’on Mars” on Google Maps. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for those driving, while others can reach the area using public transportation and short walks.

Fairytale Canyon (Skazka Canyon)
Fairytale Canyon, known locally as Skazka Canyon, is one of the most unique natural attractions in Kyrgyzstan. Located on the northern shore of Issyk Kul Lake, it features dramatic red rock formations and scenic hiking trails with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscapes.

Jyrgalan
Jyrgalan is a small mountain town located just over 8,000 feet above sea level, about one hour from Karakol. It lies within the Terskey Alatau mountain range near the Issyk Kul region.
This area is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts, offering exceptional hiking trails and access to high-alpine lakes. Accommodation options include family-run yurts during peak season, while wild camping is also popular.
Food options are limited, especially outside peak season, so travelers should plan accordingly.

Karakol
Karakol is a small city east of Issyk Kul Lake and one of the most surprising destinations in Kyrgyzstan. Originally planned as a short stop, it often becomes a longer stay thanks to its pleasant atmosphere and strategic location.
Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, Karakol serves as a base for hiking and horseback riding tours. Highlights include trying the local dish ashlan-fu, visiting the wooden Dungan Mosque, exploring nearby mountain routes, and enjoying local cafés.
