Comfort is one of the most important factors for tourists traveling to a new country. For budget travelers, affordable and convenient transportation is especially essential. Although Uzbekistan offers a variety of transportation options, its urban and intercity transport network is still developing. If you are planning a trip to Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, the following transportation information will be helpful.
Public Transportation in Uzbekistan
Public transportation is available in all major cities across the country. In addition, an intercity transport network connects the main destinations. Buses and shared minibuses (marshrutkas) are among the most affordable means of transportation. However, public transport can often be crowded, and many vehicles do not have air conditioning.
Public transportation in Tashkent is more modern and comfortable than in other parts of the country. A single bus fare costs 1,200 UZS (approximately US$0.14). Bus routes are displayed in Uzbek. If you are unsure which bus to take, you can ask the driver for assistance. English is not widely spoken, and many older residents communicate primarily in Russian.
Tashkent Metro
The metro operates only in Tashkent and is the only metro system in Central Asia. It consists of three lines:
- Chilanzar Line – 12 stations
- Uzbekistan Line – 11 stations
- Yunusabad Line – 6 stations
Although the metro trains date back to the Soviet era, the system is reliable, convenient, and easy to use. The stations are also well known for their beautiful architecture.
A metro ticket costs 1,200 UZS (approximately US$0.14). Tickets can currently be purchased at metro stations. However, the government plans to introduce a unified transport card that can be used across all forms of public transportation.
The metro operates daily from 6:00 a.m. to midnight (12:00 a.m.).

Taxis in Uzbekistan
In addition to Yandex Go, numerous private taxi services operate throughout Uzbekistan. Fares booked through the Yandex Go app are fixed in advance. If you choose a private taxi, it is advisable to negotiate the fare before starting your journey.
Payments can be made in Uzbek soums (UZS) or U.S. dollars. Russian rubles are generally not accepted. Therefore, it is recommended to exchange currency before arriving in Uzbekistan or at the airport.
Air Transportation in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan's main international airports are located in Tashkent and Samarkand.
Domestic flights connect Tashkent with several cities, including:
- Samarkand
- Karshi
- Bukhara
- Fergana
- Namangan
- Urgench
- Termez
- Nukus
Most international flights are operated by Uzbekistan Airways, one of the largest airlines in Central Asia. The airline offers connections to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It is also the only airline in Central Asia that operates direct flights from Tashkent to New York.
From both Tashkent and Samarkand airports, travelers can easily reach the city center or their hotel by public transportation or taxi. Alternatively, airport transfers can be booked in advance through KiwiTaxi. Although this service is generally more expensive than local taxis, the cost can be shared with other travelers when booking together.
Car Rental in Uzbekistan
Cars can be rented in Uzbekistan either with or without a driver. Hiring a car with a driver is a popular option for tourists who wish to explore the country comfortably and efficiently. Many large hotels also offer car rental services.
Paid parking is available in most major cities, and parking fees can usually be paid at nearby payment terminals.
